How to Download Arduino IDE: Step-by-Step Guide for Students in Pakistan

What is Arduino IDE?

Arduino IDE is the free, official software for Arduino boards. If you are starting electronics, robotics or your FYP, this is the first software you will need on your computer.

The best part: Arduino IDE is completely free, and the official download page always offers the newest version. At the time of writing, the latest release is Arduino IDE 2.3.10, but you do not need to remember any version number — just download whatever the official page offers.

Before you start: what you need

  • A computer (Windows, Mac or Linux)
  • An internet connection (only for the download)

That is all. No licence key, no account and no payment is needed at any step.

Step 1: Download Arduino IDE from the official website

Step 1: Download Arduino IDE from arduino.cc
  1. Go to the official Arduino software page: arduino.cc/en/software.
  2. The page detects your operating system automatically. Click the DOWNLOAD button.
  3. A contribution page may appear. Arduino IDE is free — click Just Download to download without paying.
  4. The installer file will download to your computer (on Windows it is a .exe file, around 150 MB).

Important: Always download from arduino.cc only. Other websites offering “Arduino IDE download” may bundle unwanted software with the installer.

Old computer? Arduino IDE 2.x needs Windows 10 or 11 (64-bit), macOS or Linux. If you have Windows 7/8 or a 32-bit PC, scroll down the same download page to the Legacy IDE (1.8.19) section and download that version instead.

Step 2: Install Arduino IDE

Step 2: Install Arduino IDE
  • Windows: Double-click the downloaded .exe file and click Next through the installer. If Windows SmartScreen shows “Windows protected your PC”, click More info and then Run anyway — the file is safe because it came from arduino.cc. Then click Finish.
  • macOS: Open the downloaded .dmg file and drag the Arduino IDE icon into your Applications folder. If macOS says the app is from an “unidentified developer”, right-click the app and choose Open once.
  • Linux: Make the downloaded AppImage file executable, then run it.

After installation, open Arduino IDE from your Start Menu, Applications folder or app list — the editor will open and you are done. Your Arduino IDE is downloaded and installed.

Download problems (and quick fixes)

  • Download does not start: Check your internet connection, pause any ad-blocker for arduino.cc, and click DOWNLOAD again. Always use the official page — never a third-party download site.
  • Downloaded file looks corrupt or will not open: Delete it and download once more from arduino.cc/en/software. A broken download usually happens on a weak connection.
  • IDE 2.x will not install on an old PC: Use Legacy IDE 1.8.19 from the same official download page — it is made for older systems.
  • Windows SmartScreen or macOS warning: This is normal for software downloaded from the internet. Use the More info / Run anyway (Windows) or right-click > Open (Mac) option described above.
