About this item
The MG996R (TowerPro) is a standard-size, high-torque servo motor with metal gears, built for heavier robotics and RC loads. When a project needs more muscle than a micro servo can deliver — robotic arms, RC cars, pan-tilt camera mounts and RC airplanes — the MG996R gives smooth, precise position control with the strength to move real loads.

Wiring the MG996R to Arduino
The MG996R comes with a standard 3-pin servo lead:
- Brown wire → GND (Arduino GND)
- Red wire → 5V–6V supply
- Orange wire → Arduino PWM pin (e.g. D9)
Important power advice: a high-torque servo like the MG996R can draw far more current than the Arduino 5V pin can safely provide. Always power it from a separate 5–6V supply rather than directly from the Arduino 5V pin, and connect the grounds together (servo GND → supply GND → Arduino GND). For bench power you can use a 12V adapter stepped down to 5–6V with a buck converter, keeping the voltage within the servo’s 4.8V–7.2V range.
Control it with an Arduino UNO R3 using the built-in Servo library.
Arduino Code Example
This sketch uses the Arduino Servo library to sweep the MG996R between 0 and 180 degrees. The orange signal wire connects to pin 9.
#include <Servo.h>
Servo myServo;
void setup() {
myServo.attach(9); // orange signal wire on Arduino pin D9
}
void loop() {
// sweep from 0 to 180 degrees
for (int angle = 0; angle <= 180; angle++) {
myServo.write(angle);
delay(15);
}
delay(1000);
// sweep back from 180 to 0 degrees
for (int angle = 180; angle >= 0; angle--) {
myServo.write(angle);
delay(15);
}
delay(1000);
}

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between the MG996R and the MG90S/SG90?
The MG996R is a standard-size, high-torque servo (approx. 55g) with metal gears, delivering up to 11 kg-cm of torque — far more than the 9g micro servos. The MG90S is also a metal-gear servo but in a tiny 9g package (up to 2.2 kg-cm), while the SG90 is the plastic-gear 9g version. Choose the MG996R when your project needs serious pulling power, such as robotic arms and larger RC models.
How much torque does the MG996R produce?
The MG996R produces 9.4 kg-cm of torque at 4.8V and 11 kg-cm at 6V, making it suitable for heavier robotics and RC loads.
What power supply does the MG996R need?
It runs on 4.8V–7.2V DC. Because it is a high-torque servo, power it from a separate 5–6V supply rather than the Arduino 5V pin, and connect all grounds together.
How do I connect the MG996R to an Arduino?
Connect the brown wire to GND, the red wire to a separate 5–6V supply, and the orange wire to a PWM digital pin on the Arduino (e.g. D9). Join the supply ground to the Arduino ground, then control it with the Arduino Servo library.
What is included in the package?
The package includes the MG996R servo motor plus servo horns, screws and mounting accessories.
Is the MG996R a 180° or 360° rotation servo?
The standard MG996R is a 180° rotation servo (0°–180° approx.), giving precise position control — ideal for robotic arms, steering and pan-tilt mounts. It is not a continuous-rotation (360°) servo.
